One of my stepping stone jobs was at a marketing firm. Some of the firm’s main clients were major magazines such as Rolling Stone and Vogue. As you can imagine competition was very strong both with other companies and within our own.
I was still new to the corporate world and was naive in the way things worked. I didn’t take the steps necessary to protect myself and ended up having one of my coworkers take advantage of me. The coworker ended up taking credit for my great work and was about to be promoted over me. This was all behind my back of course and I had not a clue.
Deciding it was time to fight fire with fire, I decided to even the score. I managed to get a hold of the coworker’s voice mail password at work and began erasing his messages. All the sudden it looked like he was incompetent, while I had all the right answers because I had the information.
Quickly it looked like he couldn’t handle the upcoming promotion. And shortly after that I ended up getting the promotion that should have been mine in the first place. I went on to have a great run at the company and loved every minute of it.
